I’m bringing back the good old blog post with an update, since I’ve been extra quiet online this year. I’ve been savoring my newfound freedom in self-employment, doing some much needed rest and reveling in deep personal joy like I haven’t felt in many years. If you follow me on IG you know I turned 40 this summer. I’ve been formulating myself into something new (my hair is even a different color!) and I feel more self-determined than I have in my entire life. De-constructing years of the external pressures for achievement, productivity & hustle culture that is just as evident in the self-employed online business world as it is working for a corporation.
I started this online space (Instagram, email list, Facebook page) back in 2020 with the goal of building an online coaching business and selling my services & products online so I could get out of my 9-5 (AND, do meaningful work that I deeply love). And while the 1×1 services I provide aren’t changing, and are still available, there is another project that I’ve been sitting on for a few years now (a book & broader mission/message).
To be honest, in all my efforts to show up online ‘consistently’ with the goal to sell my services & products and ‘strategize’ everything around an ‘ideal client avatar’ based on marketing advice – I think towards the end of last year it kind of sucked the soul out of my passion. My deeper purpose (while not entirely disconnected from everything I’ve done so far) has been lurking underneath it.
I am a creative at heart. I am also a philosopher, an explorer of the human spirit. I am a deep thinker, and I am a fervent advocate for human rights and strengthening our empathy for and connections to each other. I want to share about random shit, to follow my creative rabbit holes when needed – write poetry for the sake of poetry. Write journal style opinion blogs. And amidst that, start focusing on this book and broader topics which neighbors mindfulness & mental health. I want to talk about broader social & cultural issues that relate to the Macro.
I’ve been avoiding this broader mission & book writing for a couple of reasons. #1 because I have a feeling that it will be somewhat all consuming for a period of time (as all births of babies tend to be). #2 because it will place me in more of a position to be criticized, attacked and misunderstood (which is what always happens if you say anything meaningful). And we all know how triggering this can be. I’ve wanted to make sure I have the nervous system capacity and grounding needed to do this.
I realize that I will likely lose a lot of you in making a pivot here – and that’s OK. Change is the law of life, we are all constantly changing, and my fervent hope is that we remember our capacity for openness and change. So if you’re unsure but curious, I hope you’ll stick around.
So what is this pivot/new focus?…. An approach & discussion around how to reduce polarization in our world. How to reduce conflict and increase our understanding of each other as humans. How to cope with the painful emotions that are triggered when we try to have these discussions. How to tolerate the unavoidable distress that we feel while trying to solve problems, without reacting on that distress unhelpfully (I’ve done/do that a lot) and also without bypassing the distress with platitudes that serve as forms of invalidation and further harm (I’ve done that/do that too). The USA needs some mental health support, and I want to be a part of that conversation.
Something I’ve realized is that I am NOT a short form content girlie (which is what Instagram is all about). Ya girl is long winded LOL. And it’s mostly because the things I want to discuss & share about are complex issues that don’t fit into small sound bites (it may also be a little bit that my Mercury is in Virgo :P). I know our attention spans are shrinking, but I’m going to ask that we try to hold them a bit longer and deeper.
ANYWAY, I know now that it’s time for me to write this book so I’ll be going into a cocoon of creation, and working with my friend and published author Gemma Hartley to write my book proposal.
I’ll still be sharing with you in long-form content (emails/podcasts or blogs), but I’m not giving myself any rules on frequency – to free up my creativity. One thing that I am no longer doing, is forcing myself to create content like a machine in the industrialist, hyper-capitalist wheel cog where everything is required to have a dollar sign on it. We must do things differently now. Our future depends on it.
YES, I am still working with clients. I am still available to hire as a coach OR therapist (depending on your needs).
For now, if you want to be sure you keep up with what I’m doing, be sure you’re on my email list. You can do that by signing up for my free Life Balance Wheel HERE. Thanks for sticking around! I deeply value your time & presence as we move forward with some new conversations.
